Alberto Burri è stato uno dei pittori più influenti di questo movimento. Medico, durante la Seconda Guerra Mondiale fu fatto prigioniero dagli Alleati e, nel periodo di prigionia in Texas, iniziò a dipingere e ad esplorare le possibilità artistiche dei materiali industriali, quali la juta, il ferro, il legno bruciato e le plastiche.

Verso la fine dell'anno, iniziò a servirsi nei suoi lavori del fuoco, realizzando le prime piccole combustioni su carta. Il 15 maggio 1955 sposò, a Westport (California), la ballerina americana d'origine ucraina Minsa Craig (1928-2003), conosciuta a Roma l'anno precedente.
