Code 89 has to do with the thermostat getting stuck. Mine got stuck open which set off the 89 because the car couldn't stop cooling itself down. Or get up to temp quickly causing it to act weird. I replaced the thermostat and all was good. I'm guessing whoever had this car before you just ignored this problem, which caused the engine to run.

Code 89 has become a recurring nightmare. I've had at least six different experts work on the car and every time we seem to have located the issue and resolved it, that code 89 suddenly appears.. If it is USA calibrated equipment, it may define Chevrolet under the 'Trucks setting' and not 'cars'. Make sure they are using compatible Test.
